Hyper 9e goes 1.2.3. at WCRC - 3/13/11 by davegm
Reported by The Bumps - West Coast R/C Raceway: Sunday races at West Coast RC found Tim Bump coming out of retirement to start getting ready for the 2011 season. At the start of the 8 buggy A-main, Hector Sanchez took an early lead followed by Scott Howard driving his Hyper 9e and James Grossaint driving his Hyper 9e. Tim Bump found himself and his Hyper 9e in the back of the pack and about a half a lap down after a first lap incident. Scott took the lead at about the two minute mark followed by James in second place. With two minutes to go in the 6 minute race, the crowd was going crazy with a 3 car battle developing for the win. Scott was still leading the race, James in second and Tim Bump in third. During a close battle for the second spot, James bobbled and Tim got around to take the second position but ran out of time to put any pressure on Scott who went on the win after leading most of the race.

Chad wins with his 4x4 SCRT10 at Hot Rods - 3/4/11 by davegm

Reported by Chad Bradley - Hot Rod Hobbies: The first Friday night club race at Hot Rod Raceway was a huge success bringing in over 100 entries to their  new club night. In the Pro 4wd SC class Chad Bradley took the win in both rounds of qualifying driving the SCRT-10 setting the TQ going into seven minute main event. The start of the main did not go as planned as Chad got loose and spun on the start and had to make his way through traffic from nearly last place, Chad was able to regain the lead on the third lap and was able to continue setting fast lap times which in turn lead to a one lap lead over second place.

Will wins at new track in Palmdale Ca. - 3/8/11 by DJ

Reported by Will Eikenberry - I went to the new track in Palmdale called Controlled Chaos Raceway, it's a little small, maybe the size of hot rod but square. The track is SC all the way with small jumps and very small line, you have to right on to go fast. They have been running it dry so you have lots of grip but there are so many little bumps and ruts you have to be careful about getting it sliding.I got a little practice in before the heats and finished the first heat second and the same in round two to another guy. I had run a few 23.7s but mostly 24s. I was worried about the first lap, the straight goes into a 180 and I was sure there was going to pile. There was but somehow I got through it with the lead. I held the lead for three min with second and third catching me and bobbling over and over. I turned it over and and gave the lead away, I was matching speed with the leader but wasn't making any time and he was driving clean. At five min mark I got it together and ran five low 22s to catch the leader. I was faster in a couple of sections but he would get away from me just before the straight in a series of diagonal bumps. I would be right on him again but couldn't make a clean pass. with half a lap to go the pressure paid off and he piped it giving me the lead to the end.

Randy & Jason takes 1 & 2 at WCRC - 3/6/11 by davegm
jason_kungReported by Jason Kung - West Coast R/C Raceway: We went to West Coast R/C Raceway early to test out different set-ups for the new HoBao Hyper Star.  After a couple of hours of testing, we already found a good set-up.  The new car is a easier and driver friendly car. As we were getting ready for the races, fellow teammate James Grossaint showed up.  Since he came, it was a perfect chance to test the times on the Hyper Star.  In the first round of qualifying, Jason Kung set the early TQ with Randy Kung in second and James Grossaint in third.  In the second qualifier, Jason improved his old TQ time by 3 seconds. Randy also improved his time by 3 seconds.  As the mains came, Jason, Randy, and James stayed together with first, second, and third position.  Racing until the last minute, Jason and Randy went for the quad line instead of the double- double.  However, a slight air collision gave the better end to Randy.  The race finished with Randy in first, Jason in second, and James in third.

Jason takes the win and still tests new parts! - 3/4/11 by davegm
Reported by Randy Jason - West Coast R/C Raceway: In the 1/8 electric buggy class, Jason would run the Hyper 9e with the new #29513 center universal drive shaft, new #29333 delrin spur gear, and new #29319 CNC rear toe-in plate.  In round 1 of qualifying, Jason started from the back, but because of IFMAR style qualifying, driving through traffic wasn't too bad.  Jason set the early TQ in round 1.  In round 2, Jason would still finish in 1st while holding on to the TQ spot for the day.  In the main event Jason started from the pole position and led the whole race even improving on his TQ time...WoW!

King Kung's take 1 & 2 at WCRC - 2/27/11 by davegm
Reported by Randy Kung - West Coast R/C Raceway: Today had two heats of 4WD Short Course so Jason Kung decided to run his short course with Randy Kung. In the first heat of qualifying, Randy broke his record by 5 seconds which allowed him to earn a 14 lap run finishing in a 14/5:19! In Jason’s first qualifier, he started from the back and took too long to get to the front. However, in the second qualifier, Jason started from the front and beat Randy’s old record with a 13/5:02 even with two minor mistakes.  After finishing in that time, Randy knew the main was going to be a battle for the win. As the main events came, Randy started from the pole with Jason in second. It was a continuous battle between Randy and Jason swapping for first and second. Like magnets, they drove battling for the whole race until the last straightaway. The interval from first to second was 0.3 seconds!

FEBRUARY... A MONTH OF CLUB RACING by davegm
Reported by Robin Nelson - February was a month of club racing at my local track, The Hobby Connection in Easley, SC. I ran both 4x4 Short Course Truck and 1/8th scale buggy.  The weather has alternated from temperatures in the 30's to the high 70's this month so I had a wide range of conditions to race in and prepare for the upcoming Psycho Nitro Blast in March.  This area has had a surge of new drivers in the 1/8th scale class, but the Short Course racers are still the majority of the 60 to 75 drivers each week.  I've won both Short Course and1/8th scale classes this month to keep OFNA Hypers at the top of the podium.  I've enjoyed this month at home since the bigger races out of this area area bout to begin.  Happy Birthday to Levi! He celebrated his 10th birthday at the race track.  I really enjoyed the cake and Levi loved the new truck body painted by his dad.  Thanks for letting me eat half of your cake, Levi!
Kortz takes TQ at Nitro Challenge - 2/27/11 by davegm
Kortz-4x4Reported by Not Kortz - The Dirt Nitro Challenge is always one of the biggest events of the year and 2011 was no exception. In the Elect Short Course 4x4 class, Jeremy Kortz ended up TQ after Thursday's qualifiers. Saturday was main event day for truck racing and Jeremy Kortz was positioned out front TQ'ing the popular Short Course 4x4 class. When the main event sounded, Jeremy shot out in the lead and led for the first 2 laps. Casey Peck took advantage of a small mistake by Kortz and took the lead. Casey was on fire during the mains and took the win followed by a hard charging Jeremy Kortz in 2nd and Kevin Gahan in 3rd.

Hot Rod Hobbies on Satuday night with Hypers - 2/9/11 by DJ
Reported by DJ - It was the dynamic duo again (James and myself) heading back out to Hot Rod Hobbies to have some good racing with the Hyper cars. I brought my Hyper TT and Hyper 9-2.0 and James testing out his new Tim Bump edition chassis. My Hyper 2.0 would be hard to get a hold of as I was having glitching problems through the race program and the main and would have to call it quits early in the main because the glitching only got worse. My Hyper TT however was good from practice to racing the only hiccup in my TT was my fan breaking and not have a spare on hand so I would run minus a fan on my Novak Havoc Pro SC. The TT took it's paces as it would TQ in Sc Unlimited and go on to finish it off with a win in the class without failing or over heating. I would run hard in the race to pull away from teammate Will Eikenberry to get a lap on him during the race, I pushed hard over the ski-jump to make fast laps over and over. The TT took the beating as it continued to land on the flat over the S-section of the track to make those good laps, Hyper TT got a lot of looks from the little truggy as it continues to impress. James was able to grab the TQ in his class in the second round and put down a clean run in the quals but in the main it was a different story as he was taking out by a truggy and causing his servo to overextend locking up the servo and ending his night, don't worry James your car looks good the win is just around the corner. Oh and I also forgot to mention as we were heading over to Hot Rod's my Mitsubishi ESC (Alternator) in my Mazda truck took a dumped while we were cursing up the 5fwy at Dodger's stadium. I would like to thank Mr.Pat Grossaint (James dad) for helping us out and getting us back on the road and making it to HR.
King Kung's still getting Double Wins! - 2/14/11 by davegm
randy_kungReported by Randy Kung - West Coast R/C Raceway: 1st Annual Honor Guard Fundraiser Race In the 4WD Short course division, Randy Kung ran his Hyper 10SC. In the first round of qualifying, Randy also started from the back and was unable to set the early TQ. However, In the second round of qualifying, Randy was able to beat the TQ time by 12 seconds with a 13/5:03. In the mains, randy started from the pole and led for the first three laps. He made a bobble right before the whoop section which dropped him to second. However, the leader bobbled a few laps later, which allowed Randy to inherit the lead and take the win with a 13:/5:04.

In the Expert 1-8th scale division, Jason Kung would run his Hyper 9E. In the first round of qualifying, since it was the first race, the track was a little wet. He also started from the last position. Thus, he was unable to set the early TQ. However, in the second round of qualifying, Jason started in front with a grooved track. He was able to set the new TQ with a 14/5:11. As the main events came, Jason started from the pole and led the whole race, taking the win and also beat his TQ time by 5 seconds.

Jason wins the WCRC 1/8th Main - 2/11/11 by davegm
Reported by Randy Jason - Saturday Night Off Road Racing At West Coast R/C Raceway: Randy Kung didn't come race because of school work so Jason Kung would try to cover both classes.  Since there wasn't too many 1/8 scale drivers Jason signed up for the 4wd Short Course class, and 1/8 buggies would run with the short courses.  In round 1 of qualifying Jason ran his Hyper 10 SC and TQ'd over the 1/8 scale buggies finishing in a 13/ 5:08.  In round 2 of qualifying Jason ran equally fast and held on his TQ'd over the 1/8 buggies. When the mains came Jason brought out his 1/8 HoBao Hyper Star to run the 7 minute A-Main event.  Jason lead the whole race from start to finish.

Dj wins with Hyper TT and Hyper 9e at Hot Rod Hobbies by DJ

Reported by Dj - Last Saturday James & I headed out to Hot Rod Hobbies to try out the cross over track, with a fast high speed sweeper corner, triples & quad jumps the track looked like a lot of fun. With a quick stop over the famous Serrento's Deli in Culver City for some killer Pastrami's we food coma-ed over to the track ready for some action. As soon as we got to the track James was locked & loaded with a battery in his Hyper 9e & practicing laps. I was ready to whoop out the Hyper TT on stock tires & see how it felt with outdoor conditions. My TT was stuck to the track & every turn you could hear the tires screeching which made a fun time.James also was having fun on the track with his 9e & we were set to race for the afternoon. Qualifying was a little harsh in electric buggy as my buggy was loose on my tire choice and not looking over my buggy when needed but in my Hyper TT it went to TQ in Unlimited SC. James got the better qualifying time in buggy so he started 2nd, I started 5th but the race was a little hectic as I was barreled into last into the first corner from cars behind me. It took some time to get clear of drivers to get into second & try to catch James who was leading by 11 sec. But with some bobbles from James(I think he heard his name too much and he started to glitch) I got closer to him. He caught up to back markers fast and they were racing for positions as James was lapping but they did not want to give up their spots and ended up tagging James to put him upside down and for me to take over top spot and grab the win. For James the back marker hit took him out of the race for the DNF and finish toward the back "DARN!!"

My Hyper TT was ready to take it all for Unlimited SC as my TT was even faster as the evening set & the track was at it's best. I made one turnover in the race but the rest of the race was destroyed by the TT as I continued to lap drivers over and over in the 7 min race.

CRCRC MIDWEST NITRO CHAMPS 2011 by DJ

Reported by Brian Bourland - The race weekend started off with a snow storm Thursday that brought 4-5 inches to the area.  Traveling through the icy conditions was tough at times but I arrived at the track later that evening.  It was just in time to setup and checkout the last few minutes of open practice. Friday consisted of 2 rounds of controlled practice.  That was followed by one round of 5 min. heats to seed the qualifiers for Saturday using your best 3 consecutive laps.   Saturday qualifying started off a little slow for me.  After the dust had settled by the end of the day, I was sitting 12 overall in the electric 1/8 buggy class.  In the B main I was able to come out with a Win and take the 1 bump spot to the A final.  The A main started off like a freight train and I got a good start.  A little bobble in the infield section a few laps later after feeling some pressure, quickly dropped me back thru the field.  With time left on the clock I put my head down and tried to make up as many positions as possible.  With the super stiff competition in this one, I knew it would be tough.  By the end of the main I was in the 8 position, and that is where I would finish. Through it all my OFNA Hyper 9e was flawless and so fun to drive. Thanks to OFNA for making such awesome products!
