I have an ofna LD3. I'm looking to switch to the 0.8 gearing. My first question is... what's the benefit? Next....what is the best gear combination for drag racing?

More efficent & for me the gears are more reliable.(I've had the old style break off teeth) but the biggest plus is because you only have to change the pinion when adjusting gear ratios. With the old style you also needed to change the spur = more time + have to carry more spares.

Best gearing? That depends on engine, distance of your drag etc etc.

You maybe interested in this then 0.8 2 speed for LD3/CD3

The best thing to do is buy a set of gears you think will be right and try them. You should have some idea what way you want to go by your current ratio. If you need more punch in 1st then drop down a tooth, and if you need more legs in second gear up. Good thing with 0.8 is you only need to change the pinions , the old 1.0 module you need to change both pinions and spurs.

Stock LD3 gearing is:
1st: 16/42. Ratio = 42/16 = 2.625 * (diff ratio is 2.5) 2.5 = 6.5625
2nd 20/38. Radio = 38/20 = 1.9 * 2.5 = 4.75

Now stock 0.8 runs 55T and 49T spurs so if you wanted to get your ratios around the same you would need 21T 1st gear and 26T 2nd gear. Just remember unlike the old 1.0 module gears you can change a single pinion and it all meshes correctly with 0.8 :) Makes ratio changes to suit a track much easier.

Thanks so much for the info. I just finished installing the 0.8 gearing but I was told I had to use the bell for the 0.8 gearing which has larger gear ratio than stock. Meaning more teeth on the bell

Stock 0.8 is:
1st: 21/55 = 6.5476
2nd: 27/49 = 4.537

Compared to stock LD3 gearing 1st a little higher and 2nd is higher. You will need to use a bell that accepts 0.8 gears, and yes these will have more teeth compared to 1.0 module but dont forget the 0.8 module spurs have more teeth so you can have more teeth but a much lower ratio
ie:
19/55 would be 7.237, a much lower ratio compared to stock 16T 1.0 pinion and 42T spur.
