Regarding big sanctioned race events such as ROAR or IFMAR Races: Anyone can compete in these events. You must pay a registration fee and event fee. Once you are registered and signed up you first have to run qualifying races. Most events have 4 rounds of qualifiying. Each round is 10 minuets long. Each persons totol number of laps and each lap's elapsed time is scored on a computer. After all 4 rounds are completed for every driver then the computer sets up the "mains". The computer takes the best 2 qualifying runs and totals them together by points according to how each driver finished in each round. Then they rank the drivers with the least number of points first down to the drive with the most points. Then they take the top 8 drivers and place them in the A-Main. The next 8 ranked drivers get placed into the B-Main and the next 8 into the C-Main and so on. Once the lowest Main is ran the first and second place drivers "bump up" into the bottom of the next main to make a total of 10 racers in each main. This goes along like that untill all mains are ran up to the A-Main. That's when the top 10 very best drivers of the event meet for a final showdown and run for all the marbles. Awards are either Trophies or Plaques. Sanctioned racing rules do not allow cash or monetary prizes for racing. There's a whole lot more to it than that but this is a general idea. The only restrictions on tires are wheel diameter for each class. Any type tire or tread patten is legal. Engines are restricted by class.
